Farmer to Farmer is offering 4 trips this winter to
Ecuador, Honduras and Guatemala!!!

Ecuador November, 21 – 29, 2009
Spend Thanksgiving with Craig and Lucy in Ecuador. Craig and Lucy will meet you at the airport and take you to their high altitude rural Peace Corp site. There you will see the projects they have been working on for the past 2 years, help build goat stables and visiting local Kichwa families. Included in the trip will be excursions to hike or ride bikes at Chimborazo mountain, and a day of sightseeing in Quito. Travelers can choose to stay with Craig and Lucy or in nearby Rio Bamba in a hotel or guest house. After this time you may want to travel to other areas of Ecuador such as Mindo for fabulous birdwatching. Group size will be limited to 7 people.
Cost: Airfare (range from $800-$900.) plus $200 for meals, in country transportation, hotel 2 nights in Quito. If you prefer more comfy lodging in Riobamba it would cost $100 more.
As Lucy wrote: “We seriously could use help with building the stables and no super carpentry skills are needed as I was very busy one day sawing boards by hand. Honduras Coffee trip January 2 – 11, 2010
Honduras Coffee trip December 30th, 2009 to January 8th, 2010
Andy Gaertner, board president, will lead the 2nd Farmer to Farmer trip to Honduras. You will visit the coffee farmers and their families, and other projects in the Comayagua and Rio Negro area. There will be chances to hike in the Cloud Forest. We are lining up a work project to contribute in the community, probably building a cooperative hoophouse structure to help dry coffee beans. Andy was in the Peace Corps in this area and knows the people and area intimately. Although the organized trip ends on January 8th, you will want to budget a few days to take in some of the great tourist sites on Honduras such as: Copan Ruins, North Coast Beaches or the Bay Islands. Guatemala January 13 – 20, 2010 (these dates are tentative and may change to fit travelers needs.)
Jody Slocum will lead a week long trip to Guatemala which will start in the beautiful colonial city of Antigua. Then you will travel to Lake Atitlan and stay in Santiago Atitalan at the beautiful Posada de Santiago. There you will visit the families of the Comite de Tejedores (the weaver/farmer group we have been working with for 16 years, pick coffee, see the coffee processing, visit the new hospital under construction, and visit other projects such as the elder center and the local library. The activities will be geared to the interests of the group. Jody has been traveling to Guatemala for 16 years and has a special interest in the weaving of Guatemala. Group size limited to 8 people.
Cost airfare (range from $550-$650), travel and lodging expenses (about $40- $50 a day) and a $100 donation to Farmer to Farmer to help cover our costs. There is an optional volunteer work week at the end of the trip helping with the construction of the new hospital in Santiago Atitlan. Honduras March 20 – 28, 2010
“Green, fair trade and organic” are the labels more and more consumers look for as they consider the effects of their purchases on the planet. But do we know what fair trade means for the farmers? Come to Honduras and visit a fair trade coffee cooperative, learn about sustainable development, and speak with community organizations and civil leaders to learn about fair trade and free trade from all angles. How does NAFTA affect the lives of Hondurans? How is immigration to the US connected to our consumer habits? Find the answers to these questions and more.

Farmer to Farmer is teaming up with Abriendo Fronteras/Opening Borders to offer this trip. The trip fee covers. It does not cover airfare. Ovidio Flores, an agronomist in Honduras and his wife, Jovita have opened the welcome mat for us to come and see for ourselves. They will make arrangements within Honduras for the group. Erin Altemus (Farmer to Farmer board member and past Abriendo Fronteras delegation to El Paso member) will be the group leader.
Trip Cost: airfare (range from $600-$750.) all in country travel, food, and lodging depending on how many people sign up—$900-$1200.
